Rock Ballad of The Week: Brian Setzer “Breath of Life”

You stepped in and dark turned to light,
Well I knew right there you were the breath of life,
Just when I’d given up the fight,
Well I knew right there you were the breath of life,
Just when the morning had lost its bitter bite,
Oo you never think your heart will butterfly,
Ballerina don’t you dance your life away,
Those years meant nothing till this cold December day,

You stepped back to say goodnight,
Well I knew right there you were the breath of life,
We looked up at a blinding light,
Well I knew right there you were the breath of life,
I never thought I could say those words again,
I think you know the ones,
I’m sure you know the ones,
I’ve been hiding alone in the night,
On and on like a dream that never ends,

So come on out,
Don’t say goodnight,
Out of the shadows to the neon light,
Meet you down where that dixieland plays,
Leave all your troubles, gonna dance ’em away.

Drop my hadns by my side,
Let the hourse slip away,
Don’t say nothin’, let the music play,
Twenty years on down,
When the time is right,
I’ll turn around and know you were the Breath of Life.

– Brian Robert Setzer (born April 10, 1959) is an American guitarist, singer and songwriter. He first found widespread success in the early 1980s with the 1950s-style rockabilly revival group Stray Cats, and revitalized his career in the late 1990s with his Swing revival band, The Brian Setzer Orchestra.

The Knife Feels Like Justice was released in 1986 by Brian Setzer on the EMI America record label. The album was promoted well by the label, as Setzer had progressed from playing rockabilly music to the more adult-oriented and more topical rock-roots sound, as several of his musical contemporaries had recently done like Bruce Springsteen,John Cougar Mellencamp, and Lone Justice. The album peaked at number 45 on the Billboard US album chart.

Although it was not as popular as hoped upon its initial release, the original pressings for both the cassette andcompact disc versions have sold out. It was re-released on CD in 1990 and again in 1999. In 2007 it was released again as part of a “2 albums on 1 CD” format, paired with his 1988 follow-up album Live Nude Guitars. An import CD version is also available.

  1. Amazing lyrics! Have a lovely day!

  2. Don’t think I know this one although. I love Stray Cat Strut but I’m sure Brian is tired of hearing that!
