Monday Thoughts: Our Biggest Rival

I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence. – Frederick Douglass

How come so and so is successful? Why can’t I be like so and so? I can do that better than so and so!

How many times have these thought crossed our minds? Comparing ourself to someone else or that tinge of jealousy because someone is getting so much recognition and we feel like “I’m working my ass off at this and no one notices. We really need to stop fighting against who we are.

Our biggest rival in life is ourself, yes that person inside you that is in search of who you should/want to be.  Instead of nurturing and growing in who we are, we sometimes fixate on what other people are doing and accomplishing that we devalue our own worth and what we bring to this life.

How often do we tell/ convince ourselves that what we have inside is not good enough to make it or the dreaded comparison…not as good as so and so. The next time these thoughts surface, don’t give them the time of day and go about the business of being you. Be who you were called to be.

Stop fighting against yourself because you are freaking awesome!

  1. Such important thoughts, Sylvester! We can get so trained in our belief that we need to be a particular way in order to be someone in this society. For sure it is a good thing to get inspired when we see how others made it but we need to stop believing that their way is our way. They only made it right because they did it their way. Great post, Sylvester!!

    1. Thank you, Erika! We do not need to compare ourselves to anyone else or think less of ourselves because someone else is progressing further or at a different level than us. Do our best with our gifts/talents and progress at the pace/level that was meant for us.
